Stephanie Low's Creative Designs

I can’t even with this Mermaid!

July 31, 2017 by Stephanie Low Leave a Comment

Ok folks – this mermaid has got to be one of my most favorite designs to date!

AND on top of that she mark’s a moment in Stephanie Low Creative history… She is my first COLOR tattoo commission!  The customer asked if I could add a “pop of color” to her which I hesitantly said yes to and when that “POP” turned out fantastic, we went ahead and decided to add more color and just finish her off head to toe!

I was hesitant to add color since I am still very new to creating digitally.  I am still learning my program and my abilities within those programs.  But once I got started it all rolled out very naturally.

For those wondering I illustrate my tattoo and stamp imagery using an iPadPro and Apple Pencil in the Adobe Illustrator app. I have seen and heard amazing things about ProCreate but have yet to master it so I stick with Adobe Illustrator.

I am so grateful for the amazing creativity my customers bring me.  The level of thought and consideration for their future tattoos is so much fun to be a part of.  To create something meaningful and original for them has been one of my crowning achievements and I owe that almost entirely to them.  I have worked with people from the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands,  New Zealand, Argentina, South Africa, Poland, Sweden, Ireland, & Israel!  What an amazing thing that I get to do!? Spread love and art and history and memories and creativity with people from every corner of the world!  I am so blessed!

That’s all – I love you all and  love this mermaid and the history she made in my story.

DIY Painted and Stamped Vase

April 4, 2017 by Stephanie Low Leave a Comment

Target + DIY = Retail Therapy + Creative Therapy: my happy place equation that makes my trips to get a gallon of milk and new socks for my kids much more exciting!

I found this plain little geometric vase at Target and saw so much potential. I decided to hit YouTube to see if I could find a cool way to paint/die/embellish ceramic. I found several tutorials on using Alcohol Ink on ceramic to “paint” things like mugs, coasters, flowers pots, etc. Find one to suit your comfort level.

Let’s get started…first you coat a section of your vase with Isopropyl Alcohol. BEFORE it dries you need to apply the alcohol inks. I used Tim Holtz’s Adirondak Alcohol Inks by Ranger Ink in Denim/Aqua/Gold. Let gravity help by simply dripping it along the edge of the vase. OR you can apply it in drops/swirls, move your vase around to let the ink do its thing or blow on it to create interesting shapes/blends. Keep applying alcohol and inks until you have covered the surface.

THE BEST PART: you can erase it all and start over again if you hate it! Simply wet a rag/paper towel with alcohol and wipe it all down! I will remind you however that sloppy and messy looks really cool sometimes, so don’t over think it!

Once it is dry then go over it VERY LIGHTLY with your Mod Podge (it might smear a little, so go over it very gently!). Once that first coat dries I suggest another coat just to be sure you have covered the whole space.

Then I applied my cute swallows from Swallow Stamp and Die Set from my Spring Love Collection. I used a waterproof ink pad and embellished them just a tad with a permanent pen.

SIMPLE! Yet SO Unique and So personal! You could do this over and over again but never have the same outcome!

I hope you like this simple little DIY project as much as I do! I can’t wait to do more of them and gets a little bit whacky with color choices and stamp combos! Be sure to share your projects with me!

Shimmering Watercolor?! Yes Please!

March 7, 2017 by Stephanie Low Leave a Comment

Dudes!  Stop what you are doing and please read carefully!  I have gotten my hands on a watercolor palette that SHIMMERS!

Now I am NOT a girly girl, I am a tomboy at heart.  BUT!  I love some shimmer and some glitz when given the opportunity.  And the opportunity has presented!

Got a box of goodies from Prima Marketing Inc. and I cannot get over their product.

They are a art/craft supply company and it gives me life.  It is my personal mission to help breakdown the wall that divides ARTISTS from CRAFTERS and Prima Marketing Inc is doing just that.  So of course I want to support them and love them and shout it on the mountain tops!

Their paints and supplies are all artist grade.  They have a huge mixed media art following.  They offer page sizing like 12×12 inch for crafters/scrapbookers.  They have great looking products and the artists they have make stunning images.

I got the following materials and supplies from them:

Watercolor Paper Pads, X2 – 12×12” and 8.5×11”  |  Watercolor Pencils; The Vintage Lover  |  Watercolor Brush Pen x2

Watercolor Palettes; The Classics & Shimmering Lights  |  Watercolor Brushes, 7pc

Water Soluble Graphite Sticks, 6pc

I haven’t used all of the supplies just yet but last night I painted one of my more recent drawings with the Shimmering Lights Palette and I Am In Love!

It goes on so smooth and blends very well.  It did take a few minutes to soften the cakes in order to get them to activate, but that is normal for cake watercolor paints.  I was worried that the lighter shades would be obsolete but they were more vibrant and noticeable than I initially assumed.  I do wish there was a little bit more variety in shades but that being said, I used every single shade in the palette for this little doodle painting.  Maybe they will come out with more palettes that have shimmer in them in the future *crosses fingers!*

I can’t wait to get started on more projects so that I can use the other supplies!

I already have a shopping list of other supplies I want to order ASAP!  Stay tuned!

Mixing Medias

January 30, 2017 by Stephanie Low Leave a Comment

I noticed something at the Creativation show that I had already suspected… “Mixed Media” seems to have a very different definition in the craft community than it does in the art community. Or maybe the definition is the same, but the overall look and feel is very specific in the crafting world.

I was taught to understand “mixed media” to be any combination of more than one media used in one art piece.  Crafting mixed media has a specific style of its own that is very unique.  Not good bad or ugly, just different; specific.

I am not sure where my style fits but IT IS MY OWN and that makes me happy.

And JUST LIKE ME, my mixed media style is straddling the line between “art” and “crafting” harmoniously.

This little mixed media piece I created includes

  • A hand drawn illustration using Sakura, Pigma Micron pens which I then water-colored and accented with my lovely lovely Gelly Roll pens.
  • Water-colored die cut circles using my Spellbinders circle dies.
  • Die cut Yupo paper which I “painted” with Ranger Alcohol ink on a previous day.  I used a geometric style Spellbinders die by Lene Lok.  I love the contrast between geometry and organic elements!
  • I used the same Lene Lok Spellbinders die on traditional white paper
  • A simple butterfly stamp and die from my Spellbinders “Earth Wind Sea” collection which I water-colored.
  • Gold and white bakers twine weaved in and around the geometric die.
  • A ripped piece of graph paper for my daughter’s name/date written in Gelly Rolls pens.
  • A print of one of my Instagram photos done by Social Print Studio (which I LOVE and get printed all of the time!)

It is not necessarily a play by play but this is what I used.  I would have loved to do a video but it took a while over the span of a few days and I haven’t figured out the process of capturing my process yet. That was a mouth full.

Creativation 2017!

January 26, 2017 by Stephanie Low Leave a Comment

I find myself a part of an industry I didn’t even know I should aspire to be a part of until about this time last year.. That may not have made sense, but remember, I write like I talk and I don’t talk right, so here we find ourselves. Finding ourselves can be tricky…! haha! Moving on

I attended the Association for Creative Industries’ convention in Arizona last weekend and I had the time of my life! It is called Creativation, like Creative Innovation or Creative Exploration or Creative I-Never-Want-to-Leave-ATION……

Imagine creatives from all over the WORLD getting together to discuss art and creation and networking and business in a mutually beneficial and supportive way! And then add on looking at pretty things you want to steal, making new talented friends and not being responsible for keeping three tiny humans alive for five days – and you have found my paradise! I didn’t want to leave.

I attended amazingly informative classes and seminars and workshops. I met people who weren’t weirdly competitive but EAGER to share their wealth of knowledge and expertise. I was buoyed up and placed among a group of creatives that I feel far exceed my talent and then told that I am on par with them.

I wish I could spend the time to be more specific and give you a play by play of my time in Arizona but I am not sure that that would be beneficial on this platform (please please email me if you want specific questions asked and answered and we can go at it that way.)

WHAT I NEED TO TALK ABOUT is NOT the incredible information I walked away with or the amazing new friends I have in my life now or the goals I have made for the new year – though I could spend days boring you with every amazing detail and forcing you to know just how blessed and lucky I am to have experienced it all!
I want to discuss the INDUSTRY…

I am not “from” the craft industry much as the many people I met that had been in the craft industry for years, decades! I am not even from the “art” industry per say… However, I am an artist. I am a creator. I am proud to call myself these things. It is part of my identity. It made me so very happy to see so many crafters using “art” techniques and then folks like me, with “art” backgrounds, finding their crafter’s voice and embracing it. I love to see art supplies being used by crafters and craft supplies being used by artists. Because at the end of the day, is there even a huge difference between artist and crafter?! And if so, WHY!? Why must there be a difference? Why the attitude? I want to see more mom-and-pop and brick-and-mortar craft stores selling art supplies. More art stores embracing a crafting culture. Isn’t the ultimate goal to inspire customers, people, friends, loved ones? To encourage creation and the cathartic release one gets from making something with our hands?

I saw more blend of the two worlds than I expected to see and this made my soul scream with joy. Talking with individuals at my Spellbinders demo table about this concept and the blending of the two industries was met with excitement to learn and embrace the other.

I came away from my weekend feeling more drive to create in uncomfortable ways. Weird? No!

Comfort slows my evolution process. Discomfort stretches my mind.

I want to evolve.
I feel that art evolves my soul and my personality and then in turn evolves those around me.

I cant wait to begin playing with new media and developing my “crafter’s voice” at the same time.  I am a crafter and an artist and they make me happy.  Creation makes me happy.

Also – I am waaaay too self aware and this blog post would have probably been easier and fun to read had I talked about the show and all it’s pretty booths and make-and-take projects! OH WELL!

Update I guess

December 5, 2016 by Stephanie Low Leave a Comment

So – I have been procrastinating my blog for a minute. Mostly cause I ran outta space due to uploading large photo sizes and now I need to go back and upload the same images at a smaller size after I resize them…..UGH! I am a creative, I create on a whim and as I like and when I can. I do not love the behind the scenes stuff! If I could I would hire an unpaid intern to take care of all of this stuff for me! hahaha!!!

My stamps are up on the Spellbinders “Coming Soon” page which is the Bees-Stinking-Knees! I am still unsure when they will be available for purchase but soon since, well, they are in the coming SOON section!

Ok so anyways, thought I should stop by and say hello and throw some appropriately sized images up on my blog.

Who doesn’t love scarves?!

November 16, 2016 by Stephanie Low Leave a Comment

So. I made a custom stamped scarf the other day!
I saw a $7 plain white scarf at my favorite store, ROSS, and I immediately saw a canvas.
So I did some quick YouTube research and found that I can stamp permanent images on fabric quite easily.
I already had a Staz-On permanent ink pad for stamping and of course I have plenty of cute stamps!
I laid out my scarf on my nifty sewing board.

img_0906

Not sure what it is technically called so I will call it a sewing board! I don’t see but had hopes to do so at one point so my mom hooked me up with a proper sewing shopping list. I think I have only used it for sewing like twice but have used it for cutting wrapping paper hundreds! Hahaha! Anyhow…
I laid out my board and assembled my supplies.
Stamps, Staz-On ink pad in brown and black, clear acrylic stamping block, scarf and flat surface.
I like that I could stamp the small brown feathers all at the same time by using a large stamp block and that this way they were always in the same configuration.

img_0905

I stamped the brown feathers all the way down the edge of my scarf and then went back and stamped the black larger images between the brown ones in the space I left behind.
The only trouble I came across was making sure the fabric didn’t have any wrinkles me that I had enough ink and pressed firmly. It took some getting used to.
img_0907
Upon completion, turn the scarf over and iron it on a low setting without steam and supposedly you can wash it. I can attest to this because I have not had need to wash mine yet and I am not sure if I ever ever needed to wash a scarf anyway!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

November 4, 2016 by Stephanie Low 2 Comments

Ok folks! Here it is!  My big announcement that I have been TEASING about for months now.

I have no patience usually.  I like to get things when I see them instead of waiting for a special occasion.  I like to tell family the latest piece of family news as soon as it happens.  Instant gratification is my thing!  I should, but I won’t apologize for it!

So my story starts in 2015!  (So much for instant gratification… Time for you to be as patient as I have been!)

At some point in 2015, a dear and brilliant friend of mine, Ally, sent her amazing artist sister over to my facebook page to check it out.  Her sister, Heather, loved my work and immediately suggested I think about getting into the CRAFTing industry as a licensed artist like she did.  I jumped on board with this concept because crafting is a huge part of my artistic identity.  I am a scrapbooker and love to DIY home decorate and am an eclectic artist. The move seemed to be the most natural move I could make with my career.  So after much talk with Heather and a decision to become a designer member of the Craft & Hobby Association – I threw my name into the ring so to speak.  There is an annual conference for the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) and I was deeply committed to attending the conference in January 2016.  I managed to assemble a portfolio and got business cards ready and was all stoked to attend, until at the last minute due to children in school and husband with no time available to take off from work, I was unable to attend. I was heart broken.  UNTIL!  My sweet friend Heather offered to take my portfolio and cards and anything else I wanted to send with her to the conference and present my work to companies for me.

She was able to connect on my behalf to several craft manufacturers, companies, bloggers, fellow artists, etc.  All were impressed and enjoyed my work.  Cards were collected, distributed and the wait commenced.

After the conference she sent me my portfolio and the cards she collected for me.  She gave me some amazing contacts. Among the contacts in the pile was a contact for a company called Spellbinders Paper Arts

I sent Spellbinders an email and was pleasantly surprised to get an email back.  In time I was offered a contract to create rubber stamp designs for them exclusively!  I would be expected (AND DELIGHTED!) to create different sets of stamp collections over the span of a few years and affiliate with Spellbinders and their creators and directors!  I was so excited for the offer and took it (obvs!).

sb-tattoo

Fast forward a year (almost) and I have created several collections of stamps for them and the first one will hit the market in a month!  The rest will be released throughout next year and coming years!

So here we are – a month before my first stamp release and I couldn’t be happier and more excited for the big day!

My first collection has eleven different pieces with several rubber stamps in each.  I will be showcasing the stamps over time between today and January.

I hope you like them as much as I liked creating and then using them!

Owl Galaxy

November 3, 2016 by Stephanie Low Leave a Comment

Aloha my creative friends!

I wanted to give a run down of my Galactic Owl creation for those that are interested in my supplies and techniques.

I have been doing a whole series of paintings/creations from the first line of stamps I have designed (available for purchase next month) and the owl painting was the first one I created.

image1

I started with a 6″x9″ Mixed Media paper by Strathmore (my new favorite watercolor paper because it is a velum/smooth texture and heavier weight- 140lb.) and I knew I wanted to do a galaxy background, because, DUH! They are amazing! SO I went over to youtube and did a quick search for some “watercolor galaxy painting” tutorials.  I watched this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOe5DAnFkI4)

I chose to use the pink from the video because I secretly love pink, and even though I am a feminist and a bit of a tom boy – I am secure in my color choices!

I used india ink for the blackest part, diluted a bit with water to make it more blendable.  And a combo of pink tones from the following brands: M.Graham & Co., Daniel Smith, Grumbacher watercolors. I threw some bits of purple ad even a bit of teal colors in there for some variety.

Once the background was adequate and dry I went back to it and spattered some M.Graham & Co titanium white gouache paint for the white stars. I went back through with my Sakura Gelly Roll pens and accentuated some of the stars and then connected them randomly to make some constellation designs.

image12

I then took my favorite Spellbinders die set, the standard circles in large (which I also used to make the outermost circle before I painted the galaxy) and made some quick and simple little circle designs around the galaxy with my silver Gelly Roll pen.

At this point my background is laid and I am ready to work on my owl.  I used the same basic palate for my owl as I used for my galaxy, which was and can be risky artistically.  Using the same palate can look one dimensional and even lazy, but I think the lack of contrast in this palate works well for the piece.  Since there are obviously no pink/purple owls that can fly near a pink nebulous galaxy, I think it works!

image4-copyimage3-copy

I stamped the owl on the same mixed media Strathmore paper I mentioned above with Ranger, Archival Ink, jet black.  I use this ink and a few other similar brands because it is waterproof.  When looking at stamp pads, be sure to look if the ink is waterproof or not if you choose to use a wet media with the image.

I then began to randomly lay in color and add pops of color here and there with the use of my trusty Gelly Roll pens! After color application I was ready to get my little owl all cut out.

image1-copy

I used the matching die set and the Platinum die cutting machine from Spellbinders by simply placing the metal die over my owl stamped and painted image and rolling it trough the machine.  The sharp edge on the metal die gets pushed through the paper and cuts perfectly around the image!  Simple and beautiful!  I also chose to cut out a simple black outline for the shadowed effect you see in the final product. I think this helps with the color palate similarities.

image11

Now that I have my owl finished I find a good place for her on the galactic background and tack her down with some glue dots (or double sided tape, or any type of adhesive that wont warp your paper).

image13

After I have her placed I throw up some gold circles with my Gellies and the standard circle dies.

And Voila!!! She is ready for display!

Wild Garden, India Ink Tattoo

October 21, 2016 by Stephanie Low Leave a Comment

03121201-copy

I did this design in 2014 and it was one of the first tattoo designs I completed.  I was so brand new to this concept of selling art and setting up business.  I remember being so excited by the way it turned out.  I used india ink and water to create gradation.  It was probably the first time that I saw something I created and was completely satisfied.  Looking at it now there are things I wold change, but that is because I have had time to grow since then.  But it still looks so lovely.

I learned after releasing this image into hyperspace, that watermarks are essential!  I posted this on Pinterest with no watermark as well as two or three others.  I had no idea that it would be stolen so many times.  I lived in blissful ignorance to art theft since I had never actually created anything someone would want to steal!  I OFTEN find this and a handful of other illustrations stolen and used as tattoos.  One of my favorite pass times is searching through the hashtag #feathertattoo to find all the mimics and thieves.  I can only blame my ignorance in those first months.  If I had placed a watermark, theft would have been less common.  Live and learn! I cant be too mad since it is my own fault (even though I think artists should have an unspoken pact among each other!).

I came to Stephanie with a tattoo idea that was a bit different from the floral designs I saw on most of her listings. But she was incredibly open and supportive of new ideas and it was an absolute pleasure to work with her! She constantly kept me updated as she progressed on the drawing, and she was very patient and wiling to make big and small changes as I saw them. Amazing artist!!! I love it! Thanks for the amazing Koi :)

  • When I look at my custom design it still takes my breath away! Let me start off by saying that Stephanie is amazing in every way imaginable. I fell in love with her work when my friend had a design made last year. I finally decided to commission her right before she did a big move. In all the life changes and shuffle, she forgot about my design. I admit I did too. When I contacted her to see if she was settled in she was so beside herself she had forgotten! I was in no way upset but she was amazing. She worked closely and patiently with me to design exactly what I wanted. Although I just love her creative ideas so I let her run with most of it. She created a masterpiece and I CANNOT wait to get it forever on my body! She was so apologetic and even reimbursed my deposit! She is such a professional!

I'm so excited to get this tattoo! Stephanie captured exactly the elements I described to her and she created a truly custom, personal work of art. She was responsive, honest about her process, set expectations, solicited feedback at various points, and the result is everything I hoped for. I'm looking forward to finding the right tattoo artist so that I can have this as a permanent work of art I can always display. Thank you, Stephanie! Pictures of the final tattoo to come!

Let me start off with that Stephanie is INCREDIBLE. She truly has the customer's best interest at heart, and works with you to create a design that you love and one that will look good!! She kept in touch with me throughout all steps of the process, always making sure I would get the perfect design- and I did! I'm absolutely obsessed with this design and cannot wait to put it on my skin, it's better than I could have imagined, she really took my kinda weird request and made it beautiful. Couldn't be happier!

  • Bethany Monciavaiz

So the first thing is that my actual design is not the one that will appear next to this review, so keep this in mind when reading. Stephaine was brilliant to deal with, there was an open line of communication and update, she never took offence to requested amends, and gave enough of a steer and opinion on the overall look and feel without taking over of making me feel in any way the piece wasn't entirely mine. it is clear from dealing with Stephaine and looking at her work that more then just a business this really is a labor of love and something she cares about which makes it all the more special for customers. I would certainly recommend the services of Stephanie Low Designs.

I'd been admiring Stephanie's work for almost a year before I was able to snag a spot on her waitlist. My design has a few unconventional things in it, the cupcake for one, and lots of big round objects but she didn't shy away from the challenge; in fact, she stepped up and knocked it out of the park. I feel like I changed things a thousand times, but she was very kind and nothing but professional, she replied quickly even though there is a 6 hour time difference between us. Stephanie was wonderful to work with and my tattoo design is everything that I imagined it to be. I cannot wait to have it put on my skin. Thank you so much, Stephanie!!
